Caption from Down Beat: Sam Donahue & Sy Oliver: Here are a pair of guys who started out as hot soloists, turned to arranging and are now leading orchestras. Both are playing "fundamental" swing, with a maximum of rock and a minimum of extreme musical devices, be it be-bop or Dixieland. When Sy recently opened at the Zanzibar, Sam was a block away at the Aquarium. The last week of Sam’s engagement, Lionel Hampton was also booked into the Aquarium and the cats were set for the Swing Battle of ’46. But the ensuing behind scenes scuffle ended up with Sam playing afternoons, only . . . And the Aquarium ain’t open afternoons!
