There are pages and pages of fish tanks, aquarium kits, testing supplies, tank stands, fish food, and accessories. Plus there are pages of things for cats, more pages for dogs, rabbits, horses, and any pet you can think of. At Beyond.com here are even hamster cages for cheap.

Of course, they also list a huge variety of items in other categories, such as home furnishings, gifts, clothing, appliances, games, and tools. Whatever you are looking for, the selection is huge, and there are lots of vendors to choose from.

I think the complete aquarium kits are a great way to get started. Just order one, have it delivered, and follow instructions. You know the filters and accessories will fit the tank. There is no need to rush around town trying to put together a reasonable setup, and you know beforehand what it all will cost.

Some of the new aquarium styles are so gorgeous that you will be tempted to buy more than one. The complete kits make great gifts for kids, too. Shopping on line is a great way to find unusual items that you might not run across in local stores.

Meanwhile you could pick up items needed for other pets in the family, like that new hamster or puppy, or the kitten who needs something to play with besides shoelaces. And, um, fish.

You did remember to put the lid back on the fish tank, didn’t you? Hmmm, maybe you’d better go check.

An unwell fish can introduce diseases into your tank that can infect your other fish, and may even cause them to die. It helps to become familiar with a species of fish before you buy it as this will allow you to be clear on exactly what it should look and act like. Ensure the fish looks alert with clean clear eyes, fins and scales.

It is also important that the fish appears eager to feed and can maintain its position in the water column. And finally, as a precaution, only buy from a clean healthy store that you trust.

Choosing Your Next Saltwater Fish for Your Aquarium

yellow watchman goby in a saltwater fish tank

You finally made it through the tank nitrogen cycle, you tank has been sitting empty for weeks now, and it is finally the time to get your very first saltwater fish. This is a very exciting time, you will remember your first fish forever, and you want to make sure that this new addition is going to be in your tank for a long time to come. You want to make sure that the first fish you bring into your tank is healthy, and the appropriate fish for your tank size.

The first thing you want to do is completely research what you want to start with. You do not want to get to the pet store and on a whim decide to get a fish.

Impulse buys usually only lead to disaster, and you either end up with a fish who dies or one that you end up having to take down your entire rockscape in order to get the fish out. Whatever goes into your tank should be considered a permanent resident, and you want to be able to keep this for the duration of the fish’s life.

You want to investigate the fish when you get to the fish store, ensure that the fish looks healthy, swims regularly, have no white spots, clear eyes, and is breathing normal. You also then want to ask someone who works at the store to feed the fish for you. If a fish store will not feed a fish when you ask them to, you should leave and find a new place to purchase fish from.

Your fish should eat the food as soon as it is dropped in, if it does not eat the food, move on to a different fish. If a fish will not eat In the pet store, odds are it will not eat when you get it into your tank. If your fish gets passed all of these small tests then get ready to bring him home and acclimate him to your tank accordingly.
