Maybe your idea of aquarium bliss is a large saltwater setup. Or maybe you just want a little freshwater tank for the kids—or for your desk at the office. Whatever you are looking for, there’s a site that probably offers that—plus half a dozen things you never thought of. All at great prices.

There are pages and pages of fish tanks, aquarium kits, testing supplies, tank stands, fish food, and accessories. Plus there are pages of things for cats, more pages for dogs, rabbits, horses, and any pet you can think of. At Beyond.com here are even hamster cages for cheap.

Of course, they also list a huge variety of items in other categories, such as home furnishings, gifts, clothing, appliances, games, and tools. Whatever you are looking for, the selection is huge, and there are lots of vendors to choose from.

I think the complete aquarium kits are a great way to get started. Just order one, have it delivered, and follow instructions. You know the filters and accessories will fit the tank. There is no need to rush around town trying to put together a reasonable setup, and you know beforehand what it all will cost.

Some of the new aquarium styles are so gorgeous that you will be tempted to buy more than one. The complete kits make great gifts for kids, too. Shopping on line is a great way to find unusual items that you might not run across in local stores.

Meanwhile you could pick up items needed for other pets in the family, like that new hamster or puppy, or the kitten who needs something to play with besides shoelaces. And, um, fish.

You did remember to put the lid back on the fish tank, didn’t you? Hmmm, maybe you’d better go check.

I ran across the Fish Shop of an on-line pet supply store, and found some of the most beautiful, interesting and useful fish tanks, stands, supplies and accessories I’ve seen anywhere, including local fish stores—from high-quality algae scrapers to gorgeous acrylic and glass aquarium coffee tables. So now I want just…everything.

I found all sizes of aquariums and stylish, furniture-quality aquarium stands—from traditional cherry to ultramodern acrylic. I especially like the modern tank-and-stand sets that go perfectly together and look like a single unit. They are so sculptural. I like that look.

I also liked a sort of globe aquarium for a betta with a sculptured metal holder that shows off the betta as the jewel it is without obscuring the view. Beautiful and elegant, especially for a formal environment. I want one for my office.

But if anyone asks what I really, really want for Christmas, there’s this octagonal acrylic coffee-table aquarium with the round glass top. (Yes, I know experts recommend against coffee-table aquariums, but I love it!)

Most of the freshwater aquarium fish we find in our pet stores originate from the tropical river of the Amazon in South America. The Amazon has more variety of fish and plant life of all the rivers in the world put together.

The amazing variety and beauty of Amazonian fish and plants is what drew me to this style of aquarium. I have fallen in love with creating Amazon community tanks and re-creating the environment and natural eco-systems of this river.

The diversity of the Amazon River and its many streams means there are infinite ways in which you could create an Amazon theme, and the style and decor of your aquarium setup will depend on what sort of fish you wish to keep.

Today I will focus on setting up an Amazon themed aquarium suitable for Angelfish or Discus. After setting up and maintaining saltwater aquariums professionally for more than 3 years, and an enthusiast for over 12 years, a general rule of thumb is that a saltwater aquarium will cost about $50 per gallon of water.  For example, a 30 gallon setup which includes the tank, filter(s), and inhabitants will cost about $1500.

Given that the entry cost for this hobby is relatively expensive, being well informed about the needs of saltwater fish and their behavior will save you a tremendous amount of money in the long run.  There are three main keys to keeping a successful saltwater aquarium which include knowledge, patience, and consistency.

The main draw that initially attracts people to saltwater aquariums are the fish themselves.  The way they effortlessly glide through the water while displaying their beautifully vibrant colors painted by the most skilled artist entices people into the hobby.
