Your Questions About Saltwater Fish

Mandy asks…

How many saltwater fish can I put in a 30 gallon tank?

About how many saltwater fish can I put in a 30 gallon tank? I’m planning on making a spare 30 gallon tank a fish only saltwater aquarium. I’ve had freshwater tanks, but im new to salt. Also, which saltwater are best for a 30 gallon tank?

Aquarium Lover answers:

I would stick to just small fish, I have a 40 gallon tank and have a Regal Tang in it and while it is small it is OK but I will have to move it to the larger tank when it has grown as it will be too big.
They say you should have 1 inch of fish for every 6 gallons, so therefore you could have 5inch, which would only give you 2 small fish, but I think this is silly and I don’t stick to this rule. In my 40 gallon I have a common clown, a regal tang, starry blenny, bi-colour bleeny. Yellow clown blenny, strawberry gramma, red scooter blenny and a blue cheek goby, and they are all doing well, so you should be alright with about 6 or 7 small fish.
I would avoid damsels, they are cheaper than the others but you are likely to have problems with them as they are very territorial and do bully the other fish.
The best salt I have found to use is Instant Ocean but there are a few different types at different prices, the marine shop will be able to advise you.

Maria asks…

What saltwater fish should I get for my 40 gallon tank?

I have a 40 gallon tank and im going to make it a saltwater tank. I want to do a FOWLR tank with aggressive fish. I just want your opinion on what aggressive fish you would put in this tank? Thanks!

Aquarium Lover answers:

In a 40 gallon tank you dont want to go too big. Really it all depends onyour setup. If you have it hooked to a comunal sump with another tank and live rock (but no rock in this particular tank) you might be able to get away with a trigger fish, or even a lion fish. But remember that most of your agressive fish will eat any coral youhave in you tank!!!

Here is a good website that even if youdont buy anything from them their bios on teh fish are very acurate and can help you choose what you want to get.

good luck and have fun with it!!!!

Sharon asks…

What kind of saltwater fish for a first timer?

I am a fish hobbyist. I have 10 tanks in a building behind my house. However, I am just getting in the saltwater fish area. I have a tank getting set up right now. It is 30 gallons. I want it to have snails, fish, and all kinds of small creatures. What would be the best for a beginner?

Aquarium Lover answers:

Gobys, Damsels (but some can get slightly aggressive), Yellow Tangs stay a little smaller, I really liked my Flame Hawk fish and how he perched on the coral and watched everything. There are some angel fish that stay smaller, a Wrasse (the ones that stay small) looks like a bid flying when it swims, i had a green wrasse. A mandarin goby has really nice colors. Live rock will usually provide you with some odd little critters in your tank as well.

Those are just a few i could remember having off the top of my head.

Your Questions About Freshwater

James asks…

freshwater!!!?

what is in side fresh water.if you can….can you give components example(H2O) something like that plz plz i need this for my science project and if you can give me tap water componenets plz evryone!!!!

Aquarium Lover answers:

Fresh water is different from drinking water, the first one is H2O only
the second has minerals in healthy and safe quantities (tities!!!!!)
like K,P,S, and others.
Things like Lead (Pb) and Mercury (Hg) are poisonous and should not be in water.

Paul asks…

Freshwater???????????????

I am also setting up a 30 gallon tank but i just want to put 3 female bettas in it would that work? i dont have a filter though…

Aquarium Lover answers:

Unless you are planning on performing 25% water changes every day, (EVERY day!) you’ll need a filter for your tank.
You’ll also need a heater, set to 78-80F, as Bettas are tropical fish who do not do well in cooler or fluctuating temperatures.
Female Bettas need to be kept in well planted aquariums, with plenty of caves and such for hiding in, and plenty of space so that they can claim territory as their own.
If you are planning on keeping only Bettas in your tank, you could get away with a larger group of up to about 11. Female Bettas must always be kept in odd numbered groups to dissuade aggression, and should be added all at once. This is rarely possible, as so many fish added at once will kill your cycle, ( If you’ve not already educated yourself on the cycling process, please do so before you bring any fish home. Http://www.firsttankguide.net/cycle.php ) so a complete rearrangement of the tanks plants, decorations etc. Is advised every time you add new fish. This will deter your established ladies from bullying the new arrivals.
The other aspect to keep in mind when setting up a sorority tank is that not all female Bettas will get along, so it is best to have a back up plan. The smaller group you have, the more likely you’ll be successful.

Lizzie asks…

Any freshwater eels or stingrays that can be kept in a 30 gallon tank?

I would love a freshwater stingray or an eel but all of the ones I’ve seen get too big any suggestions?
Also what are the smallest stingrays/eels and how big?

Aquarium Lover answers:

One of the smaller “Spiny Eels” would probably be OK.
Peacock Spiny Eel grows to around 12″
Tanganyikan Spiny Eel…. 12″
Half-banded Spiny Eel… 6″
and a little bigger,Mottled Spiny Eel at 16″.
Most can have tank mates, some are social with their own kind.

A little on Spiny Eels…

Your Questions About Saltwater

James asks…

saltwater?

i want to get a 30 gallon saltwater tank. i want to have atleast two clownfish. How any can i have??

Also what else can i have in this tank and how many fish in total???

I have heard that anomne (spelt rong) is poisonous?? is it poisonous for humans in the tank??? How do you put it in the tank and where you want it to be????

Aquarium Lover answers:

How old are you crystal? Sounds liek your parents would be doing most of the work here.

In a 30 gallon tank you can have 2 clownfish, make sure they are either a male and a female or two babies.
Anemones are poisonous but if they touch the palm of your hand they dont hurt too bad.
It doesn’t matter where in the tank you put them they will move around to find a spot that they like.
Anenomes need very powerful light, which is expensive, and really good healthy water, so they are fairly hard to keep.

Robert asks…

Saltwater?

Why can’t you drink saltwater and why can’t you water your plants with it?

Aquarium Lover answers:

No taking salt water from the ocean is not illegal for the last damn time

i just wanted the points

Maria asks…

What is the smallest saltwater tank I can set up?

Well, I have a $1000 budget for new fishtanks this year. This year I decided to get a new 75 gal. with another oscar. I have never did salwater before and I imagine after my oscar tank is done I will have about $100-$150 left over. With this I would like to set up a very small saltwater tank. Is it possible to have a reef tank very small? I have never did saltwater tanks before, so I would like to start small anyway. I think maybe like a 5 gallon? I have heard of people successfully keeping, I believe a type of damsel, in a 5 gallon saltwater tank with live rock and an anenome. Is this ok to do? How much would it cost me? Thanks for any answers!

Aquarium Lover answers:

There’s a difference in what you CAN set up, and what you can keep successfully. There’s a lot of “nano” in both fresh and saltwater these days, and I saw an article in one of the major magazines (this was a few years ago) of saltwater tanks less than a gallon (no fish).

The answer that mentioned stability has it right – the smaller of a tank that you have, the harder thay are to keep. Not only do you have a stable temperature to worry about, you have less volume for dilution of wastes (and marine fish tend to be more sensitive to poor water quality), but there’s the problem of chaning salinity as the water evaporates.

Also, consider that most marine fish tend to be larger and more territorial than freshwater “community” fish. You mention oscars, so to make an analogy you might relate to, keeping marines would be more similar to keeping cichlids – there aren’t many I’d try in a 5 gallon tank as adults. Damsels, for their size, are quite agressive, and they can grow 3-6 inches (some will be even larger). Chances are, if there were damsels in a 5 gallon, these were juveniles about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Only about 3 fish types (clown gobies, smaller shrimp gobies, and firefish) should be kept in 10 gallon tanks as adults – everything else should be in a larger tank.

The smallest size I would recommend to someone just beginning in saltwater is a 29 gallon. That’s enough for 3-4 smaller fish. If you don’t want fish, only inverts, I’d go as small as a 20 gallon long (that would be large enough for a pair of percula or ocellaris clowns and an anemone), plus other inverts. You should know before you try this, that clowns and anemones are specific about which species are compatible. You can’t randomly put a pair of clowns with any anemone and expect them to use it – some anemones won’t host clowns at all: http://www.bestfish.com/tips/032698.html

Also, when you get fish for the tank (assuming you plan more than one species), it’s best not to mix members of the same family, or fish of the same color and/or body shape as a way to further reduce aggression between fish in your tank. Few can be kept as a mated pair, and even fewer are truely “schooling” in captive conditions. If you get clowns, it’s best to buy them as juveniles and add them together. If one should die, don’t get a replacement until you are able to replace both – the remaining fish rarely accepts a new mate.

A Sure Way to Buy the Best Fish Tank for Your Money

Amphiprion melanopus and their Sea Anemone Het...

Buying a fish tank is the easiest and quickest way to start your own aquarium, but before jumping in there are several factors which will affect the size and shape of the tank you end up taking home. Make sure you have the adequate time, energy, space, and money to invest in your fish tank.

Large reef tanks are spectacular to look at, but can be extremely difficult, time consuming, and costly to care for-making a smaller tank or a freshwater environment a more appealing first option to some. (more…)
