Your Questions About Unusual Freshwater Fish

Jenny asks…

I have a freshwater tropical tank and wondered what are the most brightly coloured and unusual fish i can have

hi, my tank is 100 gallons plus and basically i am one of those guys that want the most interesting, unusual, brightly coloured and fascinating fish possible. it is a freshwater tank. at the moment i have a very small angel, a silver shark, two mollies, four neons, and an aquatic frog, however any of these can be moved to my other tank to make room. please answer as so far my expertise points me in the direction of an angelfish, which altough is a nice fish, isnt all that exciting. someone mentioned a fighter but can you please elaborate and a black ghost knife fis is meant to also be nice, but again a little more info and a few more fish. Dwarf puffer?

Aquarium Lover answers:

Gouramis, silver dollars are nice and active I like them in my tanks.

Lisa asks…

What is a really unusual fish i could get for my freshwater tank?

I have a 12 gallon freshwater tank holding 1 betta, 2 ghost shrimp,1 trapdoor snal, and 6 neons and want to add a fish that swims just above the gravel of my tank and does not need live food and is compatible with all my fish. What should I get?

Aquarium Lover answers:

If your tank is well established “been running 6 months or more” and your keeping up with weekly 20-25% water changes and you have a filter strong enough for 20 gallons at least, you could add one stone catfish, OR 3 kuhli loaches

Mandy asks…

any odd freshwater fish?!?

well i know there is freshwater stingrays and i would like to know more about them and any other unusual freshwater fish.

- are there any freshwater stingrays that can live in a 20 gallon? or are they too big?

Im not really planning on getting any, but ya know, i’d just like to know.

Aquarium Lover answers:

Nope all freshwater rays get too big for a 20gal, at least a foot across their disc. That means to give them some swimming space you will want a tank maybe 6ft x 2ft. Being flat they need more floor space than a normal fish. Think up aound 150gal or so.

For a 20 gal you might consider Hillstream Loaches They need cooler water, lots of current and oxygen to replicate their natural environment, but they are something different and “ray looking”

You must find a suitable place where you can place the tank and which is not a very crowded place. Moreover you must have enough space around the tank which is required for different activities like changing tank water, feeding etc; also you must keep the tank away from direct sunlight which can be dangerous for your fish. Ensure that you have an electricity socket near the tank.

Secondly, you must find a place which can tolerate a little but of water spillage. So you will surely not like to have it near your new white carpet. So, tile or a not so costly rug would be great choice.

How much will be the cost of the fish tank and supplies?

Naturally involves a   little cost. Just as having a dog or a cat can be a little expensive, so also a fish tank. If you are interested in setting up a fish tank, before purchasing anything you must plan the entire cost after considering the things associated with a fish tank set up.

You need to take into consideration:
