Adding Tetra Fish to Your Fish Tanks

If you’re interested in creating your first aquarium, tetra fish will be a great first addition. Originating from the depths of the Amazon River, these fish are beautiful, dynamic fish that you can gaze at for hours. They do require some basic care and maintenance so follow my tips and you’ll have a happy healthy tetra fish.

  1. First you will need to look at fish tanks for your new fish. You may want to invest in an aquarium kit. Tetras are tropical fish so their aquarium needs differ from most fish. A kit will come with everything that you need for the ideal tropical environment for your fish. Make sure to set up the tank before you bring your tetra home. You will need to line the bottom of the tank with sand and fill it with de-chlorinated water. Make sure to add plenty of plants so that your tetra will have several hiding places. Make sure to cycle the water so that the nitrogen and ammonia is diluted properly.
  2. Next go out and purchase your tetra fish. Make sure that you go to a reputable pet store with a knowledgeable staff on hand. Look for signs of neglect as this may have an affect on the health of your tetra.
  3. Once you’ve purchased you tetra, allow it some time to get acclimated to its new environment. You may want to place the travel container into the tank and allow it to heat up to the same temperature then slowly add small amounts of the aquarium water to the container. After about ten minutes place the fish into the tank.

Purchasing a fish aquarium may seem like an easy task. However tropical and saltwater fish need special care and attention to live a happy life.

The first thing you will need to decide is whether you plan on keeping fresh water fish or saltwater fish. Generally speaking freshwater fish are a lot easier to keep so if this is your first fish aquarium I would advise a fresh water fish aquarium would be a good place to start.

You will need to make sure you do not add too much food to your fish aquarium, research the type of fish you are keeping before throwing in too much or too little food, adding too much food could be harmful to your tropical fish as they can over eat, also adding to much food could potentially pollute the tank.

Having a balanced diet is essential for aquarium fish, I would recommend that you buy any fish food in small bags or containers rather than bulk buying, this is because over time the vitamin content will gradually decline so to keep your fish food in optimum condition and as fresh as possible buy smaller bags and keep them in a cool dry place. Native from the Amazon River, Wild caught discus fish first started to appeared in the 1920s, discus fish are spread all over the world being part of true industries in Asia, for instance. When they reach adulthood, discus fish are no bigger than eight to ten inches and they make great pets, bringing an excellent array of lively color to your house.

Make sure you know everything about the needs of this fish breed before even thinking about keeping them, though discus fish are not very fragile, they still require a lot of care.

Discus fish make excellent aquarium inhabitants and they can be combined with other species in the habitat, the best choices would be the uaru or the tetras species. Normally discus fish are very serene creatures; they are a bit sensitive to stress and a disturbing environment but most fish are. However it is not too great an idea to combine them with fish that are quite a bit smaller, as the discus fish may eat them.

It is also totally unadvisable to combine any variety of discus fish with catfish since you might find you just end up with fat catfish and no discus. Like all aquarium creatures, discus fish require optimal living conditions; otherwise they are exposed to disease and may die. (more…)
